Harriet as a kid, working for Miss Susan, with the child that she was a nanny for in 1855.
Early Life and Childhood Harriet Tubman was born in to slavery along with the rest of her family in 1820 in Maryland. Her mother, Old Rit, was owned by Mary PattiisohBroddess. Her mother soon had to give her away to be sold out to be a slave. As a young girl, Harriet learned to take care of herself. She worked at the home of a planter. Later, she became ill and was sent back to her plantation. She was beaten a lot as a child. As a child, she suffered a severe head injury by getting accidentally hit in the head with an heavy iron weight by an overseer when he was trying to hit a runaway slave to punish him. She got an injury that caused her to fall asleep constantly during her life time.
